ʕु-̫͡-ʔु”-- Want to Create Your Own Fighting Game Over the Weekend, Tryout MUGEN!

ʕु-̫͡-ʔु”-- Hey, How's It Goin! Welcome to the CoolAnimeHustler Blogspot! I'm the CoolAnimeHustler and today I want to tell you about a free 2D Fighting engine called Mugen. M.U.G.E.N (also known simply as MUGEN) is a freeware 2D fighting game engine designed by Elecbyte. The Content is created by the community, and thousand of fighters, both original and from popular fiction have been created. It is written in "C" and originally used the "Allegro Library". The lastest versions of the engine now use the "SDL Library".
The engine uses 4 directional keys along with 7 buttons for gameplay (A, B, C, X, Y, Z and Start), in order to accommodate six-button fighters which use three punches, three kicks and a start button. However, characters do not necessarily use all seven buttons, nor need to follow a traditional six- or four-button format. If you also have a game controller for the PC or if you have game controllers for the Playstation or X Box then you can also setup the controls to play Mugen with the Controller. At most, two players can control characters, with others being controlled by the engine's AI (including Watch Mode, a demo mode where the computer controls all characters). In addition, several gameplay modes are available via the main menu.
The main mode of play is Arcade mode, where a character fights random characters as in other fighter games or use a coding to decide order. There are also three different kinds of Team modes: Single, Simul, and Turns. A fourth mode, Tag, is listed in the EXE along with two related script controllers, but was never used. In Team mode, either side can use any of the team modes. Single is identical to not having a team, Simul gives that side a computer-controlled partner who fights simultaneously, and Turns uses a different character for each round of play, varying from a set number usually from 2 to 4 different characters in a row. If set, the characters' starting life will be adjusted according to the number of players on each side. If one side has two characters and the other has only one in one of the Team modes, the side with two characters will each have half their respective normal maximum life values. In Survival mode, there is an endless stream of opponents, fighting them either one by one or two in a Simul match. The objective is to beat as many opponents as possible, with the game ending when the player's character or team is defeated or until a crash. The player can choose to play alone or in Simul or Turns mode, though Single Player mode gives the highest life and life recovered at the end of each round won. Survival mode was the last addition done to the engine.
Users who develop content for the game engine are commonly referred to as authors. These authors create customized content such as characters, stages and screen packs/skins. Often authors will port popular characters from 2D fighting engines such as the "Street Fighter" series, or from TV and book series such as "Dragonball Z" and "Salor Moon". Many authors will also create original content. Many websites exist to showcase and disperse the developed content and forms what is often referred to as the "Mugen Community".
Due to the customizable nature of the game engine, no two versions of M.U.G.E.N. are the same. Each person is encouraged to download their own copy of the game engine and to create or add content to match their personal preference. Groups of M.U.G.E.N. authors will often collaborate to produce a full game using the engine. These full games are available at a variety of quality levels and are released under the general M.U.G.E.N. license.
"Under this license, permission is granted to use the M.U.G.E.N Environment free of charge for non-commercial purposes... Elecbyte provides a M.U.G.E.N redistributable package, containing a minimal M.U.G.E.N Environment, that may be included with third party content for redistribution."

  1. Wow! I learned so much about building 2D fighting games. I must say I am kind of spoiled with the next gen graphics of my xbox one, but noting beats those classic video games. The ones that are in 95% of all video game arcades now. I was thinking about dressing up as Mr. Pacman for Halloween but my manager beat me to it because he is a arcade "master" himself. I will check out that youtube video with commentary to add to my understanding of MUGEN. Again, I am going to have to get out of the mindset of having next gen graphics but I'm sure I can handle it. Now that I think about it. I think the creators of Call of Duty might need to pay a 2D company from back in the day some money because of the different game modes (joke). I see that you are a man that really has a passion for sharing the game development phase with the world. Keep letting your light shine my friend. Keep letting it shine. Also, have you thought about some next gen development or are you a classic type of guy?

    1. ʕु-̫͡-ʔु”-- Hey, How's it Goin! Thank you for posting on my website it really means lot, you know. 2D always sets the tone when it comes to fighting and beatup games. Rapid Jabs, Slicing Kicks, and a Two Piece and a Biscuit Uppercut Hyper Special Combo with a extra side of Hadoken. 2D is the best indeed! Also Mr. Pacman is a reasonable character for Halloween...Think of all the Pac Man Fever when it comes to all the candy. But you're not out of the picture just yet...You can still get your awesome share of the candy if you come as the Blue Ghost from the game. When it comes to passion about video games and animation in general I really love the stuff but not only that I hope everybody can create their own game. Everyone has a story to tell and it would be good for all cultures in this world to share their imaginations to the world. I learned how to get some of the basics down from the Mugen Engine and I never took a computer programing class in my life. I learned this from Youtube and the links that I provided. I thank every last single person who's ever put a tutorial or shared their tricks of the trade on the Internet! I thank them from the bottom of my heart yo! And the least I can do is provide links and information about games and animation from someone that does not have that opportunity or let alone the resources. When it comes to my type i'm more of the classic type. Think Mega Man for example. Shoot, Jump, Dodge, Fight Boss, Grab Powerup, and Learn the Password!
